When traditional calligraphy intersects with contemporary experimental film, new forms of visual language emerge. I was invited by director David Woo to design and execute calligraphy as body art for his short film Lemongrass.
Drawing from the lyrics of White Dove by Wu Bai, the calligraphy serves as both narrative and visual texture within the film. One of the primary challenges was to thoughtfully compose each character across the contours of the torso and upper body—ensuring that the writing remained legible, expressive, and anatomically cohesive from multiple camera perspectives.
This process required a careful balance between the discipline of traditional brushwork and the fluidity of cinematic movement. The final result builds a layered visual rhythm, where text, body, and motion converge to form an immersive and poetic storytelling experience.
